5th Putrajaya International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta

Getting up at the crack of dawn is not really a preferred choice. But since this is once a year, I’ll definitely make an exception. As reported earlier, the 5th Hot Air Balloon Fiesta was held at Putrajaya over the weekend. Having managed to obtain media passes, we left at 6am in order to get there in time for the morning launch. Some of the hot air balloons that were participating this year had already joined the festival before. I saw some familiar balloons around – the orange cat, the Michelin balloon and the green and yellow Kedah balloon had been with the fiesta in previous years. This year, however, there were three new balloons – a Smurf balloon, a monkey balloon and a Godzilla balloon.

Although it was really early on a Sunday morning, there were plenty of people around. DSLR users ran around, jostling for good positions. Also, this year, the event was organized slightly differently. Instead of just flying off, the balloonists were in competition with each other – with the Rudy Challenge. “Hound” balloons competed to find the site the “hare” balloon landed on, and to throw their markers as near to the center of the “X” on the ground as possible. The marker that was nearest would win. However, we didn’t have time to stay for the results of the challenge… Oh well, we can look up the results later, I guess…

All in all, it was as fun an event as ever. I hope they’ll be back next year.
