It was time again to crown the best new talent at the Mercedes – Benz STYLO Emerging Designers 2013 contest, with the finals culminating at the Aloft KL Sentral yesterday morning. This is the 4th consecutive year for the competition, with 12 emerging designers selected from various fashion institutions across Malaysia. Presented by Mercedes – Benz and STYLO, the competition was themed “Fashion Dolls” and aimed at challenging the finalists to use recyclable items. Judging the designs were a panel of industrial professionals, headed by President and CEO of STYLO Dato’ Nancy Yeoh, Fashion Association Head from seven countries, Felicia Gan (Singapore), JC Buendia (Philippines), Jennifer Chen (Taiwan), Ali Charisma (Indonesia), Huang Ping (China), Yoko Otsuka (Japan), Koraklod Kumsook (Thailand), Gillian Hung (MODA), Baizura Tazri (YODA), and Bon Zainal (BDA). The remaining panel of judges includes Timothy Chen, CEO of Asia Fashion Inc, designers Michael Ong and Bill Keith, past winners of the Mercedes – Benz STYLO Designers of the year 2008 and 2012 respectively.

 

During its 125th Anniversary 2 years ago, Mercedes – Benz Malaysia launched the World Fashion Exchange with STYLO, resulting in the winner of the Mercedes – Benz STYLO Emerging Designer earning a showcase at the Mercedes – Benz Fashion Week in Mexico City last November. This year, a similar opportunity awaits the winner, this time to the Mercedes – Benz Fashion Week in Prague in September. The 12 finalists were Ada Zhang, Andrew Khoo, Corlin Lee, Chetan Veena, Kelvin Raw, Lisa Chow, Ng Cher Ling, Deepa Sulathireh, Phuna Boon Yi, Sammil Lau, Tan Chun Yong and Tan Pei Ji. The winners will be announced at the Mercedes – Benz STYLO Fashion Grand Prix 2013 awards night, themed Voodoo Ball, on Thursday, 21st March 2013. The award has created much hype since its inception with 2011 winner Lorenzo Peh, who made his first international appearance at STYLO Grand Prix Fashion Week in Singapore. London and showcased his avant garde designs during the inaugural F1 in Mumbai, India in 2011. Mohd Hanif Naim, the 2012 winner, had a chance to showcase his designs at the Mercedes – Benz Fashion Week in Mexico as well as in Singapore, New Delhi, and at STYLOlympics in London during the Olympics.
